A teenage boy pulled out a gun and fired it during a fight at a Cinco de Mayo carnival in Anaheim Sunday night, May 1, killing a bystander, authorities said.
The fight broke out among a group of juveniles just after 10 p.m. when the annual carnival at La Palma Park, at Harbor Boulevard and La Palma Park Way, was shutting down, Anaheim Sgt. Shane Carringer said.
A 17-year-old boy pulled out a gun and fired a round, hitting the man, Carringer said. Investigators are working to determine whether the victim was involved in the fight in some way or was a bystander.
The man was pronounced dead at a hospital, the sergeant said.
Officers assigned to the carnival heard the shot and were able to rush to the scene and detain several juveniles including the suspected shooter, Carringer said.
It was the 50th anniversary of the city’s Cinco de Mayo carnival.
