Brea man arrested, suspected of DUI and hit-and-run after pedestrian is fatally struck in Garden Grove

GARDEN GROVE — A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash Sunday in Garden Grove and the suspected driver was arrested after fleeing the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence, police said.

The victim, identified only as a 53-year-old transient, was struck at about 1:55 a.m. in the 12000 block of Brookhurst Street, near Chapman Avenue, according to the Garden Grove Police Department. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Sgt. Royce Wimmer.

His name was withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The driver was identified as 26-year-old Alexis Lopez of Brea, Wimmer said. Police said he fled the scene, but an officer was in the area and was able to locate Lopez, who was stopped and allegedly showed signs of impairment. He was placed under arrest and booked into Orange County jail on suspicion of driving under the influence, felony hit and run and felony vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

The vehicle suspected to be involved was a white 2020 Toyota Tacoma, police said.
