Booking photos of two men suspected in a string of robberies and shootings at six 7-Eleven stores and a doughnut shop in Southern California were released by authorities Saturday, July 16.
Malik Patt, 20, and Jason Payne, 44, both of Los Angeles, were arrested Friday in Los Angeles, four days after police suspect they carried out their attacks, which left two men dead and three others injured.
Patt was identified as the primary suspect who was seen on surveillance cameras in multiple 7-Eleven locations wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and a black mask, police said. He was believed to have been the shooter, according to Santa Ana police.
Patt was in custody in Santa Ana city jail on Friday. Payne was being treated for unspecified injuries before being booked at the jail.
The pair started by robbing a 7-Eleven in Ontario just past 12:10 a.m., July 11, then did the same at an Upland location about 1:35 a.m., police said.
The first shooting occurred in Riverside about 1:50 a.m., which left a man in grave condition, police said. The men then went west to Orange County, robbing a Yum Yum Donuts shop before fatally shooting Matthew Rule, 24, in the parking lot of a Santa Ana 7-Eleven about 3:25 p.m.
They then went to the Brea location, where a clerk, 40-year-old Matthew Hirsch, was shot to death and then to neighboring La Habra, where two people were wounded by gunfire, a clerk and a customer, in the parking lot, police said.
Los Angeles police believe the crimes could be related to a string of robberies and a July 9 homicide in Los Angeles, LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton said Friday.
Santa Ana Police Chief David Valentin said detectives had trailed the suspects “for a bit,” but did not disclose other details except to say technology played an important role in identifying the two men.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said Friday the two men would likely be prosecuted in Orange County and laid out possible charges, which included murder, attempted murder and robbery.
