Boat catches fire in Dana Point Harbor

Flames badly damaged a boat in Dana Point Harbor on Thursday, Aug. 18, but firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and no injuries were reported.

The 31-foot Sea Ray was in a slip at Dock L when the fire was reported at about 1:30 p.m., Orange County Sheriff’s Sgt. Todd Hylton said. One person was aboard the boat performing maintenance on the engine at the time.

The fire spread to fully engulf the craft, Hylton said. As it grew, a woman who was passing by jumped into the water to help push neighboring boats away from the flames, he said.

Firefighters managed to douse the burning vessel within minutes, Orange County Fire Capt. Greg Barta said. The scorched boat was then towed to a contained Orange County Sheriff’s dock to prevent any contaminants from possibly leaking into the ocean, Hylton said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
