Surprise At Brunch
Seasons 52 at South Coast Plaza is best known for its seasonal American fare—cedar-plank salmon or signature cheeseburger—with global influences. But it’s a Middle Eastern/North African dish, shakshuka, that takes the star turn at brunch: pasture-raised eggs baked in a sauce of sweet peppers, tomatoes, chorizo, crumbled feta, and Calabrian pepper, finished with micro parsley and served with ciabatta toast ($14.50). All that flavor is delivered in just 620 calories. 3333 Bristol St., Costa Mesa, 714-437-5252
Sour Stunner
Spectacular tableside presentation and coastal sunsets aren’t the only draws at chef-restaurateur Michael Mina’s luxe Bourbon Steak at Monarch Beach Resort. Top-tier cocktails juxtapose old- and new-school interpretations of classics. The new-school New York Sour, a personal cocktail of the year contender, uses Suntori Whisky Toki, Lillet Blanc, Velvet Falernum, lemon juice, matcha green tea, and egg whites. It’s topped with edible-ink depictions of Hokusai’s “The Great Wave” and the Japanese “Land of the Rising Sun” symbol printed on rice paper. 1 Monarch Beach Resort, Dana Point, 949-234-3900
