Autumn hues in Southern California

Southern California might not have the blazing display of fall colors leaf-peeping destinations like Bar Harbor in Maine, the Catskill Mountains in New York and the Ozark National Forest in Arkansas are known for – palm trees are always green, after all – but still, there are signs here that summer is coming to an end and autumn is beginning.

The big-leafed maple trees are a color guide to the seasons and can be found in the canyons around Orange County and in the mountains near Big Bear. The intense yellow leaves of the ginkgo trees have appeared at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

Oak Glen in the San Bernardino mountains, where you can also see the colors of the fall foliage, is famous for its late summer apple picking season. And nearby Snow-Line Orchard also features acres of raspberries and other fruit that can be harvested through November.

With the cooler temperatures of the last several day, you can almost imagine the region is about to welcome the first day of autumn on Sept. 22.
