Authorities investigating deaths of two Orange County jail inmates

Authorities are investigating the deaths of two Orange County jail inmates that occurred this week..

Joshua James Campos, 28, was found unresponsive in his cell Monday night at the Theo Lacy Facility in Orange, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

Deputies and correctional medical staff attempted life-saving measures but were unable to revive Campos, who was pronounced dead around 11:45 p.m. The death does not appear suspicious, the Sheriff’s Department said.

Sheriff’s deputies booked Campos into jail on a solicitation charge on March 4.

Jay Campos of Brea, the inmate’s father, said Thursday, March 10, his son was bipolar and schizophrenic. Joshua Campos had been in and out of hospitals and jail for about eight years and sometimes lived on the street, his father said.

“When he was out on the street, I would worry,” Jay Campos said. “At least I knew he would be safe in jail. But then he died.”

Jay Campos said his son tried to phone him Monday afternoon from jail but an account wasn’t set up to allow the call to go through. After an account was established, Joshua Campos never called back.

Jay Campos said he last spoke to his son two months ago.

“It’s a weird coincidence that he didn’t try to phone me for two months and then he calls me the day he died,” Jay Campos said.

The second death was that of a 65-year-old inmate at Central Men’s Jail in Santa Ana who died Tuesday, March 8, at a local hospital, where he had been treated for COVID-19 since Feb. 3.

The inmate’s name was not immediately released. He was booked into jail on May 15, 2020, by the Santa Ana Police Department for alleged lewd acts with a child.

A final cause of death for both inmates will be determined following toxicology testing and autopsies

Additionally, the Sheriff’s Department and Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate and review the deaths.
