Arrests made in shooting death of Monterey Park officer in Downey

Two days after an off-duty Monterey Park police officer was shot and killed in a parking lot outside of a gym in Downey, police have made arrests, authorities announced Wednesday morning, Aug. 10.

Police did not provide details, saying they will do so during a 2 p.m. news conference in front of the Hall of Justice in downtown Los Angeles.

Gardiel Solorio, 26, was identified by authorities Tuesday as the officer killed outside the LA Fitness at 12070 Lakewood Blvd., about 3:25 p.m. the day before.

Authorities have shared little information concerning the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Described as humble, dedicated, selfless and hard-working, Solorio is survived by his parents, siblings and his fiancée, Monterey Park Police Chief Kelly Gordon said on Tuesday.

His family described him as “tough as nails, but a child at heart.”

He grew up in Bell Gardens and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Cal State Los Angeles.

He had just graduated from the police academy in July and started a field-training program with the department on July 25, Gordon said.

“Although his time with Monterey Park was very short, we all knew from the moment we met him that he had the heart of service and was going to be a great officer,” she said.

Investigators had followed several leads following the shooting, Downey Police Capt. Scott Loughner has said, and on Wednesday morning he confirmed that arrests had been made in the case.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
