A gusty, warm Thanksgiving holiday expected across Southern California

Southern Californians planning outdoor Thanksgiving feasts this week will want to hold onto their table cloths and paper plates as unusually strong winds, along with warmer temperatures, are likely to show up for the holiday.

Santa Ana winds will make their way across the region on Thursday, Nov. 24, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Dan Gregoria. Gusty winds reaching up to 50 to 60 mph may race through more isolated inland areas like the Cajon Pass.

The San Bernardino and Santa Ana mountains will also see heavy winds of up 40 to 45 mph. In Los Angeles County, gusts of 30 to 40 mph will make their way over the mountain and foothill areas.

“It will be the windiest in the morning through the afternoon on Thursday before the gusts begin to die down,” Gregoria said.

For holiday travelers, Gregoria warned drivers to be mindful when driving through areas with heavy gusts.

Thursday will also be the warmest day this week with temperatures in Riverside and San Bernardino counties climbing into the high 70s to low 80s. Orange County cities including Anaheim and Fullerton will see similar warm temperatures well into the 70s, and Los Angeles County in the high 70s to low 80s.

By Friday, the winds are expected to die down across the region before making way for calm weekend weather. A warming trend will continue Friday and Saturday before temperatures begin to slightly decrease on Sunday into the mid-60s to lower 70s.

Heading into next week, Gregoria said there will be a chance for some light showers beginning Monday or Tuesday.
