8-year-old girl injured after mother drags her with SUV in Placentia, police say

A 44-year-old Laguna Niguel woman was arrested in Placentia after she dragged her daughter with her SUV and later kicked at an officer in a residential neighborhood Thursday night, Sept. 16, authorities said.

Erin Michelle Garcia and her 8-year-old daughter were visiting the girl’s grandmother’s house in the 400 block of Orchid Lane, but sometime around 11:30 p.m., Garcia decided to leave, Lt. Christopher Anderson said.

Garcia, who was accused of being intoxicated, got into her Honda CR-V to drive away, but her concerned daughter told her to stop and grabbed the passenger side door handle, Anderson said.

Garcia looked at the girl and began driving, dragging her daughter approximately 300 feet, Anderson said. A bystander intervened and attempted to get Garcia out of the car, but she again drove forward and dragged the bystander a short distance.

Officers were called shortly after 11:35 p.m. When they arrived, they found Garcia back at the house hiding behind bushes in the backyard, Anderson said. As they arrested her, she kicked at officers, but was ultimately taken into custody.

Her daughter and the bystander were both taken to hospitals with moderate injuries, Anderson said. The girl had abrasions to her legs and feet.

Garcia was booked into jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, child endangerment, battery against a peace officer and resisting a peace officer, Anderson said. She was being held on $100,000 bail, according to inmate records.
