5 Freeway in San Clemente reopens after sinkhole scare

The California Highway Patrol has reopened several lanes of the 5 freeway in San Clemente after a portion of the roadway was found bubbling — a sign of a potential sinkhole — on Tuesday, March 21.

The CHP was called to the scene, on the northbound side of the freeway at  Avenida Vista Hermosa, at around 9 a.m. after reports of the roadway bubbling up. Caltrans arrived to investigate and ordered the closure of three lanes while crews made repairs and attempted to figure out the source of the bubbling.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m., the CHP tweeted, “Caltrans has completed the roadway repairs and has reopened the freeway.”

The CHP said it would continue to monitor the roadway.

No further information was immediately available.

This is a developing story. Additional information will be added when it becomes available.
