It was not immediately clear exactly how many people were waiting to be rescued after mud and debris swept over a portion of the highway near Hill Ranch Road at about 12 p.m., California Highway Patrol dispatchers said, though there were witness reports of some 30 cars.
Crews flying San Bernardino County Sheriff’s helicopters were working to get them out of there as of 1 p.m. Bulldozers were also summoned to clear debris.
The portion of the roadway affected by the mudslide was shut down in both directions. In addition, a separate closure due to flooding was ordered on the same highway, between Jenks Lake Road and Valley of the Falls Drive. And even more flooding was reported further south between Paradise Way and San Anselmo Drive. Drivers were advised to wait until the storm passes or take plan alternate routes.
