3 men killed in hit-and-run crash in Anaheim

Three men were killed Tuesday, May 4 after the car they were riding in was hit by another vehicle whose occupants fled before police arrived, Anaheim police said.

The crash, which happened just before 3 a.m., prompted police to close both directions of Brookhurst Street between Broadway and Orange Avenue for the next several hours, Anaheim Sgt. Shane Carringer said.

First responders found a black Kia Soul and white Mercedes-Benz sedan with damage to their front ends. The Mercedes had a small fire under its hood, which firefighters quickly extinguished.

Inside the Kia were the three men, probably in their 20s, who were pronounced dead, Carringer said.

But the Mercedes was empty.

Kevin Lee was coming out of a nearby club when the crash happened.

“I just heard a car screeching and then an impact sounds, and I saw a bunch of debris and cars,” Lee told a news photographer with OnScene.TV, which works with the Register.

He ran toward the crash and saw some injured people getting out of the Mercedes, he said.

“Then a fire started, and so we grabbed fire extinguishers and tried to take the fire out,” he said.

Carringer said the occupants of the Mercedes, two women, were later found at a nearby hospital being treated for injuries.

He said police were confident they had found all involved parties from the crash. The name of the victims were not immediately released.
