PALM SPRINGS — A magnitude 3.5 earthquake was reported at 11:39 p.m. Monday in Riverside County, four miles from Palm Springs, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake was at a depth of 7.6 miles and occurred about seven miles from Banning, eight miles from Valle Vista, nine miles from San Jacinto and nine miles from Beaumont, according to the USGS.
The USGS said on its website the quake, centered about 6 miles north northwest of Idyllwild, had also been felt in parts of Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and San Diego counties according to people who responded for its ShakeMap.
In the past 10 days, there have been two earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
An average of 234 earthquakes with magnitudes between 3.0 and 4.0 occur per year in California and Nevada, according to a recent three-year data sample.
Damage from earthquakes does not usually occur until the magnitude reaches somewhere above 4 or 5, according to the USGS. It noted there are many variables including distance from the quake and the type of soil a structure is on.
