24 arrested in illegal gambling bust in Garden Grove

Garden Grove police arrested two dozen people and confiscated 12 illegal gambling machines while serving a search warrant at a storefront Friday afternoon, July 2, authorities said.

Officers with the department’s Special Investigations Unit served the warrant at a storefront in the 8200 block of Garden Grove Boulevard about 5 p.m., Lt. Mario Martinez said.

All 24 suspects were arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor illegal gambling charges, Martinez said.

It wasn’t immediately clear what tipped police to the location, but the arrests and seizures come less than a month after another similar bust was made at a home in the 10000 block of McMichael Drive, near Brookhurst Street, June 10.

Nineteen suspects were arrested as a result of that search warrant, which was executed after numerous complaints from the community, Sgt. Troy Haller said in June.

Typically, the city sees 10 to 15 illegal gambling operations per year, authorities said. Also known as slap houses, the underground operations have been popular in Little Saigon and surrounding cities for years.
