2022 elections: Who’s running in Orange County’s new House, state Senate and Assembly districts?

Since California’s Citizens Redistricting Commission finalized new boundaries for every state and federal political district last month, new candidates for those new seats have jumped into the June primary nearly every day.

So far, there are at least 42 candidates vying for one of six newly drawn Congressional seats, five state Senate seats and nine Assembly seats that are up for election this year. Candidates have until March 11 to file formal declarations to run for office.

Two House incumbents — GOP Reps. Young Kim of La Habra and Michelle Steel of Seal Beach — will run outside the districts where they live, which is legal but not considered politcally favorable. Steel’s race in the redrawn CA-45 is considered a toss-up by forecasters and expected to be one of the country’s most competitive House races.

One Assembly incumbent — Cottie Petrie-Norris, D-Laguna Beach — is poised to move so she can run in a more favorable district, since state lawmakers must live in the area they represent. She’ll land in AD-73, where she and Assemblyman Steven Choi, R-Irvine, will face off in the county’s only incumbent vs. incumbent battle.

Neighboring AD-74 also is expected to see a hyper-competitive race, as incumbent Laurie Davies, R-Laguna Niguel, faces two strong Democratic challengers in Laurie Girand and Chris Duncan.

Three state Senate and four Assembly districts have no incumbents running, while AD-64 had no known challengers at press time.

Here’s a look at candidates who have officially launched or confirmed their campaigns for those seats so far.
