2 killed, 1 injured in solo car crash into tree in San Juan Capistrano

Two men were killed and a third injured when their car slammed into a tree in San Juan Capistrano Sunday night, Jan. 29, authorities said.

Orange County sheriff’s deputies were called to the area of Rancho Viejo and Malaspina roads, just east of the 5 Freeway, a little after 10 p.m. and found the two men who died in the front seats of a sedan, sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Steinle said.

A third man, who was in the back seat, was in critical condition at Mission Hospital, the sergeant said.

The driver was identified as Riley Hans Sullivan, 21, of Creston, northeast of Morro Bay, and the other front passenger was identified as Rex Aziz Devenny, 19, of San Juan Capistrano, Steinle said.

Investigators were looking into the circumstances and cause of the crash, Steinle said. It was not yet known if speed, distracted driving, drugs or alcohol factored into the crash.
