2 dead in wrong-way driver’s head-on crash on 91 freeway in North Long Beach

Two drivers died in a fiery, head-on collision after one drove the wrong way on the 91 freeway in the North Long Beach area early Sunday morning.

For more than 10 minutes, the California Highway Patrol tracked one of the drivers headed westbound on the eastbound side of the 91 starting at around State College Boulevard in Anaheim at 5:20 a.m.

By 5:29 a.m., the driver had smashed head-on into another driver at the Atlantic Avenue on-ramp, setting one of the cars on fire and trapping the bodies of both drivers, according to a CHP log of the incident.

CHP officials said the wrong-way driver was spotted traveling at speeds over 90 miles per hour.

At least two other vehicles were also hit during the incident.

Caltrans shut down the westbound 91 starting at Atlantic Avenue, as well as the northbound connector from the 710 Freeway for several hours Sunday as CHP investigated the crash.
