2 dead, 3 wounded in shooting near Lake Mathews in Riverside County

A shooting near Lake Mathews in Riverside County left two men dead while two others were hospitalized in critical condition Saturday, authorities said.

A fifth man injured in the shooting was treated for minor wounds and released, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

Deputies were alerted about an assault with a deadly weapon in the area of La Sierra Avenue and Tin Mine Road near Lake Mathews about 2:05 a.m. on Saturday, the Sheriff’s Department said.

When deputies arrived, they found one man suffering from a gunshot wound, authorities said. Deputies were directed toward the hills near the intersection where they found a second man with a gunshot wound.

Both men later died of their injuries.

Three other victims had left the area before deputies arrived and were also hospitalized with gunshot wounds, authorities said. Two men remained in critical condition Saturday evening, while the third man was treated and released.

The deceased were identified by authorities as Ronny Fernandez, 33, of San Bernardino and Edgar Coria, 33, of Anaheim.

While the department did not provide further information on the shooting, several questions remained, such as how the shooting unfolded and whether a suspect or suspects were still at large.

Sgt. Deanna Pecoraro, a spokeswoman for the department, on Saturday night said there was no threat to public safety in the Lake Mathews area, which is located south of the La Sierra and El Sobrante neighborhoods.
