18-year-old Moreno Valley man killed in shooting in downtown Santa Ana

An 18-year-old Moreno Valley man was killed in what police described as a gang-related shooting in a popular area of downtown Santa Ana late Saturday.

The body of Zion Gonzales was found when Santa Ana police officers went to the 300 block of West 5th Street at around 10:40 p.m. Paramedics declared Gonzales dead at the scene.

It’s not yet clear exactly where Gonzales’ body was found, or where the shooting occurred. The area just south of West 5th Street is a dense neighborhood packed with bars and restaurants, within sight of the Ronald Reagan Federal Building and US Courthouse.

Earlier reports indicated the shooting may have occurred at a nightclub. A watch commander said it happened near a nightclub that was hosting an “open mic” night. It was not clear as of noon Sunday whether the shooting was inside or outside.

Why the suspect or suspects started shooting wasn’t clear, either. Santa Ana police did not release information about a possible motive. But they said they believed the shooting was gang-related.
