17-year-old boy shot, killed by suspected gang members in Anaheim

A 17-year-old boy was killed in a gang-related shooting in Anaheim Friday night, July 8, and police are looking for the suspects, authorities said.

Anaheim police were called to the 1100 block of Acacia Street, just south of Romneya Drive and near Thomas Edison Elementary School, at about 9:45 p.m. and found the teen with at least one gunshot wound, police said.

A vehicle pulled up and at least one suspect stepped out of the vehicle and fired at the boy before getting back in the vehicle and fleeing in an unknown direction, Anahein Police Sgt. Shane Carringer said.

The victim was taken to a hospital and into surgery, but died just before 11 p.m., police said.

The boy was not believed to be a gang member, Carringer said. His identity was not made public by police, pending notification of his relatives.

“We know the suspects were likely motivated by gang ideology,” Carringer said.

Police did not immediately disclose further information regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting, or whether the boy was targeted.
