1 killed, 1 injured in crash near Brea

A driver died and another motorist suffered minor injuries Friday when a car ended up in the opposing traffic lane and collided with a van in the unincorporated county area near Brea.

Authorities have not yet identified the dead man who was described by the California Highway Patrol as a Walnut resident in his 60s.

The fatal crash happened shortly before 8 a.m. on Brea Canyon Road, near the border between Los Angeles and Orange counties.

The Walnut man was in a Honda Civic heading south on Brea Canyon Road when he lost control of the car and went off the road, CHP Officer John DeMatteo said. The car then went back on the road, crossed into the northbound lane and hit a Nissan van, he added.

DeMatteo said the driver of the Civic died at the scene while the 45-year-old man driving the van was treated for minor injuries.

The CHP shut down northbound and southbound lanes at 8:02 a.m. All lanes were open at 12:59 p.m.
