1 dead, 1 arrested in Newport Beach crash following pursuit of possible stolen vehicle

One person died and a driver was arrested after their vehicle crashed in Newport Beach following a police pursuit that started in Huntington Beach, police said Sunday.

The vehicle rolled over onto its roof in the 3000 block of West Coast Highway midmorning on Sunday, according to reports from the scene. A passenger inside the vehicle died, said Lt. Ryan Peters of the Newport Beach Police Department.

Peters said police believe the vehicle was stolen in Modesto. Huntington Beach police arrested the driver and were investigating when the vehicle was stolen.

Peters said Huntington Beach police started the police pursuit earlier that morning. It was not immediately clear Sunday if the pursuit was ongoing when the vehicle crashed.

The driver was injured in the crash and was taken to Orange County Global Medical Center. Officials didn’t know the driver’s condition.
