1 dead, 1 arrested after collision in Orange

A two-vehicle collision in Orange on Sunday afternoon left one driver dead and a second driver under arrest.

Officers shortly after 4 p.m. responded to reports of a crash in the intersection of West Sycamore Avenue and North Main Street, Orange Police Sgt. Phil McMullin said.

A man driving a Mazda Protege was pronounced dead at the scene, McMullin said. He was the only occupant of that car.

The driver of a Honda Accord was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, the sergeant said. Police identified him as Manuel Antonio Sanchez Contreras, 23, of Los Angeles.

Investigators believe the driver of the Mazda was in a left turn lane, waiting to transition from northbound Main to westbound Sycamore, when his vehicle was struck from behind by the Honda. Contreras was traveling at a “high rate of speed” when he struck the other vehicle, McMullin said.

Contreras was apparently uninjured, McMullin said. He remained at the scene to talk to police, the sergeant added, before being taken into custody.

Authorities didn’t plan to identify the other driver, a resident of Orange, until his family is notified about the death.

Police asked anyone with information about the crash to contact investigators at 714-744-7444.
